A groundbreaking masterplan to redevelop Morden Wharf has been granted planning permission.
This milestone project, which has been 10 years in the making, presents a unique opportunity to revitalise one of the last strategic sites on the Greenwich Peninsula, while forming an iconic destination for the area. The project is an exciting opportunity to create an urban fabric that integrates industrial logistics with residential.
We were appointed by U+I to develop the industrial element of the mixed-use masterplan where part of the site is defined as Strategic Industrial Land (SIL).
The challenge was to provide a viable industrial solution that allows optimum flexibility, whilst being bold with the design approach to create a cohesive community with the neighbouring residential development.
The key was to produce a commercial ecosystem that would allow businesses to grow and develop. The industrial past of the site is at the core of the design approach for the Masterplan, where the gateway to a new community is through SIL land.
A vital component of the masterplan is the formation of Morden Park, at the edge of the River Thames, this will not only be an amenity space for the residents of Morden Wharf, but will be a new public park for the wider Borough and beyond. Located at the crux of the Peninsula and Old Greenwich, the riverfront park will strengthen connections within the Peninsula, with linkages to adjacent communities.
For several years our ‘Warehouses of the Future’ research programme has been looking at new Industrial Intensification templates in response to the challenges facing retail, residential & logistics. We have been exploring exciting new concepts based around multi-storey warehouses and mixed-use urban logistics.
